Rediscovering

In my work prior to 2000, I used heavy body acrylic paints, usually applied with a sponge to achieve smooth blending. Geometric lines and shapes were drawn in oil pastel, contrasting with the rich areas of colour. Every painting had significant calligraphic text written in acrylic ink and metallic pen. I added my own graphic symbols to create an air of mystery.

"The Palace of Art I, II, III, & IV" are among my favourite pieces from this period. They are my interpretation of a small part of Romantic poet Alfred Lord Tennyson's epic poem, in which he describes a fantastical world.

My pieces became more abstract and complex in 2002. I built texture with acrylic mediums, layering collage elements and paint to push back areas of the painting, while leaving some elements partially visible. I was able to achieve great depth and a growing sense of other-worldliness. My use of calligraphy remained integral to the work while playing a smaller role.

I find it interesting that some of these more complex pieces are influencing my recent work. Something about them is calling to me - there is more to discover along this path. I take great pleasure in revisiting these ideas from an altered perspective.

To me, the most rewarding aspect of this creative journey is the amazing connection I feel when someone responds to my art on an emotional level.
