I love making these journals. It gives me a chance to explore techniques and ideas in my art on a smaller canvas. They take quite a while to make, but I find the experience delightful. There is something magical about marrying books and art.

Both front and back covers are pieces of mixed media art, hand-sewn onto a blank text block with a Coptic stitch. This binding allows the book to lie flat while it is worked in. It also looks beautiful and is very strong.

I decorate the inside covers with beautiful papers or paint and sign each journal. The spines of each signature are wrapped with decorative paper, enhancing the overall look while adding handy dividers.

The blank text block is usually 192 pages, 75 lb. white, acid free paper. I do make some of these journals with watercolour paper, varying the number of pages based on the weight of the sheets.

When each book is finished, I revel in choosing a title and adding it in type or calligraphy. The naming seems to bring them to life... it makes them real.

I must confess I have quite a collection of these Muse Journals. I tend to make half a dozen or more at once and I keep one every time. It is hard to choose a favourite, since they are all unique.

These journals are often bought as gifts, especially for young people on an artistic journey. They are a great place to spill thoughts and ideas, hopes and fears, dreams and desires. Write, sketch, doodle and paint... lovely!
